Juga shows us Self-Empowerment through the universal language of Chess in her latest release ‘Isolated Pawn’

Last year we saw Chilean singer, songwriter and chess activist Juga combine the worlds of chess, cinema and music with her release of single Isolated Pawn. With her unique style, Juga compelled us with her combination of smooth orchestration, theatrical James Bond-esque sound and spine-chilling vocals that can best be compared to Kate Bush and Edith Piaf.

In her latest song Juga uses the game of chess as a mirror of life, whereby she concentrates on the weakest piece in chess – the humble pawn – and uses this metaphorically to embody the female empowerment of the individual in life’s game. In a recent interview about the single Juga says that;

‘Pawns are the soul of chess, they can be promoted to Queen and become two pieces at the same game’ 

This embodiment of the breakthrough and growth of a woman through the figure of the pawn also enforces the concept that we’re all on an equal playing field and that we can breakthrough society’s expectations of us.

Juga has broadened our notions of chess as she enforces that the game is one of a universal language, that discards any pre-existing status. She says that;

‘We share this common language above all frontiers of idealisms and religions […] you can communicate through a chess board with anyone at any time’
