Clarity to Complexity: Madis Muul Releases New Quartet Single
Precision rather than display defines Madis Muul’s String Quartet No. 1: Echoes of Layers. Performed by the Muul Ensemble and conceived after a solitary walk, the work integrates a contemporary European idiom with discreet traces of South Indian Carnatic practice. The conception is clear: a progression from apparent simplicity to layered intricacy, rendered with control and intent.
The three movements state their case with economy. Horizon. Unfolding begins spare and gradually stratifies its detail. Growth. Time, taking its cue from Percy Smith’s 1910 film The Birth of a Flower, treats transformation as measured process. Depths. Cells closes with a sustained overtone field recalling the tampura, turning the ear inward without sentimentality. Form, color, and temporal focus remain exact throughout; textures are lucid, never ornamental.
Muul’s grounding—jazz piano at Siena Jazz University (Italy) and composition at ArtEZ University of the Arts (Netherlands), alongside collaboration with percussionist Giridhar Udupa—underpins the quartet’s rhythmic poise and timbral acuity. His distinction is documented by the Estonian Theater Award (2022) for original music, second place at the International Songwriting Awards, and recognition at the Estonian Jazz Awards; All About Jazz has described his music as “cosmic, tender, and deeply immersive.” The release will be supported by a WAV master, videos, images, and behind-the-scenes material, with live presentations planned and potential festival dates at Tallinn Music Week and Jazzkaar. A second quartet is scheduled for spring 2026, with both works slated for a special vinyl edition. Echoes of Layers is a cogent, finely balanced contribution to the contemporary quartet repertoire and merits immediate attention.
