Fflach Records Evolves into Fflach Cymunedol: A New Chapter for Cardigan’s Iconic Label
For over four decades, Fflach Records has been a cornerstone of the Welsh music scene. From its humble beginnings in 1981 as a DIY label founded by brothers Richard and Wyn Jones—members of the punk band Ail Symudiad—it grew into a multifaceted creative hub. Now, the label is embracing a transformative future as Fflach Cymunedol, a reimagined community-driven initiative that puts creativity and collaboration at its core.
The Legacy of Fflach Records
Fflach Records began as a platform to amplify rock, pop, and ska artists but quickly expanded into a dynamic studio hub in the mid-80s with the addition of an 8-track studio. Over time, its scope broadened to embrace choral, folk, country, and traditional Welsh music through sub-labels like flach:tradd and indie/dance imprint Rasp, working with an array of diverse artists such as Swci Boscawen, Texas Radio Band, and Vanta.
The untimely passing of the founding brothers in 2021 cast uncertainty on Fflach’s future. But in true punk spirit, the legacy of Richard and Wyn lives on with Fflach Cymunedol, aiming to nurture new talents and re-establish Cardigan as a creative haven for musicians.
A Radical New Vision
Fflach Cymunedol’s ethos blends tradition with innovation. Rooted in the Jones brothers’ DIY philosophy, the new initiative redefines how labels and studios function by creating a community-centric model.
The project starts with a bold campaign to raise £50,000 through share offerings—inviting music fans, local residents, and supporters of Welsh culture to invest in the label. For as little as £50, contributors become part-owners, empowering them to shape its future. Shares are available on the label’s website fflach.cymru until February 17, 2025.
Returning to Its Roots
Plans are in motion to relocate Fflach Cymunedol to the historic Tabernacle chapel in Cardigan—a site steeped in significance as the birthplace of Ail Symudiad. This move aligns with a larger vision of transforming the Tabernacle into a vibrant cultural hub, complete with a state-of-the-art studio and performance space.
This return to where it all began celebrates Fflach’s journey while embracing its future.
Inspiring the Community
Ann Jones, widow of Richard Jones, speaks passionately about the label’s revival:
“There is no better way to keep the company going and continue the ethos of Richard and Wyn than to try something new like this! It’s an opportunity for all of Fflach’s friends, who were so close to both of their hearts, to be part of the story.”
Already, the seeds of this vision are being sown, with support from the ARFOR Small Challenge Fund helping to nurture emerging bands and create fresh opportunities. Fflach Cymunedol is planning to release its first singles as part of its relaunch, ensuring the label continues to be a platform for young talent.

To mark the relaunch, Fflach Cymunedol is hosting a series of gigs showcasing its vibrant roster. The kickoff event features Los Blancos, Osgled, and the up-and-coming Dewin, performing at The Cellar in Cardigan on January 3rd, 2025.
