Track Review: Nancy Black’s ‘Dirty Little Bass’

Nancy Black’s dance-inducing, bass-infusing pop music is offering something a little different to the market and she’s making sure that she’s a name to look out for with her bags of sass and style.

Having written music since the age of 13 and forming an all girl rock band, Pink Lemons, Nancy is now taking her own personal musical journey in a different direction from what she has done before. She admits her new adopted style is much more commercial, but still retains her own unique style within the huge umbrella of ‘pop’ music.

Inspired by a messy break up that Nancy had been involved in, ‘Dirty Little Bass’ is a track that forgets those sort of problems from the past and moves on with pride. The track is full of fuzzy bass that pulses along with the tap of a foot but this is counteracted beautifully by the acoustic break towards the end of the song. It provides something a little different and unexpected in a song so driven by bass and this only goes to prove that Black is a master of her craft in songwriting.

Also, as Black sings ‘I guess you’re dancing to another beat’, listeners are reminded of the subtext of the track and Nancy’s ability to write double-sided lyrics that are deeper than they initially appear.

‘Dirty Little Bass’ might remind listeners of the music of Lady Sovereign, especially during the rapped verse sections, yet the chorus returns to the unequivocally bass-thumping beats that make Black’s track a perfect fit for a night out dancing.

Overall, ‘Dirty Little Bass’ makes  a lasting impact on both listener and the popular music scene itself with Nancy’s signature attitude that is sure to find her success in the coming future.
